Merry Christmas Swap Shoppers!
This is a just a short message to wish all the members on the swap shops in the Missouri Swap Shop Network a very MERRY CHRISTMAS! Please don't forget the TRUE MEANING of Christmas!
The true meaning of Christmas is love. John 3:16-17 says, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him." The true meaning of Christmas is the celebration of this incredible act of love.
The real Christmas story is the story of God's becoming a human being in the Person of Jesus Christ. Why did God do such a thing? Because He loves us! Why was Christmas necessary? Because we needed a Savior! Why does God love us so much? Because He is love itself (1 John 4:8). Why do we celebrate Christmas each year? Out of gratitude for what God did for us, we remember His birth by giving each other gifts, worshipping Him, and being especially conscious of the poor and less fortunate.
The true meaning of Christmas is love. God loved His own and provided a way—the only Way—for us to spend eternity with Him. He gave His only Son to take our punishment for our sins. He paid the price in full, and we are free from condemnation when we accept that free gift of love. "But God demonstrated His own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8).

Missouri Swap Shop: Clean Up Time!
It's the weekend! I know, I know, you hate the idea of cleaning on your days off, but could you do all your fellow swap shop friends a favor?
Please clean up your old posts.
The weekend is a great time to go back through and remove old posts and pictures. This helps to reduce clutter on the swap shop, making it more fun and useful for everyone to use.
Dad told you to clean up after yourself, so let's get crackin'! No dessert until you finish the job!
Have a great weekend!

Update from Doc Burkhart, Swap Shop Admin
Many of you already know, but for those of you who are new to the swap shops here in our network, not only do I serve as chief admin and spam chaser, but I am also a full-time missionary to Korea. I have been home a few months here in Missouri on furlough, going to school and raising support to return to the work I love.
If you would like to know more about this ministry, and the work being accomplished in Korea, then please check out the DECEMBER 2012 NEWSLETTER .
I would really appreciate your prayers for my wife and I. We truly enjoy serving God in this capacity, and would like to be able to do more. Your prayers would help with that a lot!
Please know that I will continue to be involved in the swap shops, as I was on my first missionary term. I am looking forward to the continued growth of connections on the the swap shop, and I know it provides a unique service to my neighbors back home in Missouri.
Thank you so much for your friendship, and if I don't get a chance to tell you, MERRY CHRISTMAS!!
God bless,
Doc Burkhart

Check Your Posts Daily
It is a good idea to check on your swap shop posts on a regular, if not daily basis. Sometimes questions and comments arise that only the original poster can answer. You might also be able to offer additional incentives or even other products that might go along with the original post.
Don't forget that once your item is sold, please delete the original post! This does two things: it reduces the amount of unnecessary clutter on the swap shop, and the original poster does not have to worry about managing messages that are out of date.
Thanks for using the swap shop! For more information on all the swap shops in our network, visit our main page at http://moswapshop.blogspot.com

How To Start a Flea Market Business Through the Swap Shop
1. Get the proper licenses for your business. You can check with your Secretary of State's Office, which often has a branch located in a municipal building, such as a city hall or county courthouse. Also, check to see if there is a Small Business Administration (SBA) locally, where you can take free business related classes and learn more on where to register your business. If not, go to the SBA's website (see Resources).
Prepare a business budget plan to set spending limits. When considering your budget, be sure to include possible expenses and any available resources for the business. For instance, an expense would be the cost of the goods or preparation of services, equipment and rental space. An available resource should help support the distribution of those goods or services. It could be a local business or store owner that can provide used equipment in exchange for a percentage of the store's profits and the promotion of the sponsoring business.
Shop for rental space. Local flea markets usually operate daily and provide utilities and affordable pre-sectioned space, in varies sizes, in a market style fashion. The rental amounts will vary according to the size of the booth. While shopping for a booth, observe potential competitors within the flea market as well as the potential flow of foot traffic in the marketplace. Ask the management about how a flea market tenants can participate in promoting his business inside the flea market. See if the management office offers help with advertising for the collective businesses there.
Consider is the types of consumers the business will serve. Survey the typical flea market customer. After picking your perfect location, go to the stores with the best sales performance and talk with some of their customers. This will help you discover the most marketable products or services and determine the optimal strategy for promoting your business to a similar market.
Choose the goods or services you may want to provide. You may want to invest in a computer with Internet service, a small cash register, credit card machine and showcases for your goods to properly maintain inventory. You may also be required to secure your own property after the flea market's hours of operation. You will need to build or install a gate or door with lock and key entry. Another approach is providing consumer services typically offered in flea markets, such as a photography studio or tattoo shop. These businesses have no marketable inventory to secure or maintain. Though you will still have to secure your equipment, it isn't necessary to have a computer, cash register or credit card machine to process sales. Service businesses usually offer flat fees for the services offered to their customers, thus, patrons are prepared to pay their balances, upon the completion of the service, with cash or check. If you don't choose to use a cash register, buy a locked portable cash box. For record keeping you can keep a simple notebook to record customers names and keep track of sales on all service transactions.
Prepare for opening day by designing some grand opening fliers to distribute both locally and within the flea market. Highlight sales and discounts for your new customers, and throw in a small gift to entice them to return.

How To Sell Vintage Items Through The Swap Shop
Selling vintage items can range from a casually rewarding pastime to being a profitable business. The vintage item market spans a multitude of interest areas. These can include large and small collectables, nostalgia pieces or hip reusable items for home and personal use. Selling vintage items will require research into choosing an appropriate selling venue, finding consumer desired products and appropriately pricing each item. The creation of a small business of this kind should be approached with diligence, organization and a sense of exploration. While doing so can be a lot of work, dealing with vintage products can be rewarding and fun.
Instructions
- 1Choose the appropriate selling arena for your products. The best way to decide where to sell your wares is to focus on their size, desirability and the type of presentation you would like to employ. Restored items of medium to high value can best be sold on eBay.com or Etsy.com. On the other hand, lower-priced items or those in need of repair will likely find a better customer base at garage sales, flea markets or consignment shops. Craigslist.com is a good venue for a wide price range and particularly for items of large size, but its use will depend on your ability to interact with customers in person. If you are interested in running a brick-and-mortar store, your first step will be to talk with your financial advisor. Write up a business plan. Keep in mind a realistic budget while finding an optimum location for your product base and your targeted customers. Look for an attractive storefront with high traffic, the opportunity for visually appealing signs and adequate interior space for your wares.
- 2Make an informed decision on what your inventory will contain. Items classified as "vintage" should be at least 20 years old. Items that are much older are considered antiques and will likely entail different research for a different customer base. Vintage inventory can vary greatly, but it will often be beneficial for you to define a main theme or focus. While not every item you attempt to sell has to fall under the theme, limiting your scope will increase your efficiency as a researcher and seller, as well as allow you to be remembered by those who have browsed your items. If possible, you should choose products of which you have some prior knowledge and interest.
- 3Research your items. In order to successfully sell older items, it is crucial to understand their history and the consumer demand. Investigate the desirability of your products and determine to what audience you should be catering. Research the specific details of your products, such as manufacturing date and place, materials used, proper care and maintenance and functionality, if applicable.
- 4Price your items in a way that is fair to you and your consumers. Pricing your inventory in an appropriate manner can be the trickiest part of selling vintage wares. Factors you must keep in mind include: market demand for the item, its condition, its age, your time spent researching and placing it on the market, the original purchasing cost for you and any costs incurred in restoration.
- 5Create eye-catching displays that will increase traffic for your items. Whatever selling arena you choose, the appearance of your products can have a direct effect on profitability. If selling at a market, fair or garage sale, display your items so they are visually appealing. Clean all items thoroughly and set them apart for maximum viewing. Make use of colorful fabrics to cover tables and displays, and create interesting signs and labels. Increase traffic by posting signs around your neighborhood, on community boards online and offline, and promoting by word of mouth. When selling through online venues, keep in mind that your potential customers will need to rely solely on the pictures and descriptions you provide. Be specific and factual in your descriptions, and be sure to provide clear, bright and flattering pictures of your items. You can increase your item views by optimizing your descriptions to include relevant keywords that are likely to be searched on major search engines. Other advertising venues include blogs, social media sites like Facebook and Twitter and newsletters.

How To Edit Items and Delete Pictures When An Item Is Sold on the Swap Shop
After a picture is posted, you can still edit the information on the image. You can also delete your picture by doing the same from this location.
*Go to your album or picture and click on the photo.
*At the bottom of the picture there is a disappearing menu. Hover at the bottom and the menu shows up with several links - 1) a link to the album, 2) Tag Photo, 3) Options and 4) Like
*Go to Options, another menu will come up where you have a choice of seven items.
*The first allows you to change the location.
*The second and third option is to rotate your picture in case it's upside down or side ways.
*The fourth and fifth option really doesn't apply to groups, unless you want to download the pictures or make it your profile photo.
*The sixth is where you choose to "REMOVE THIS PHOTO".
*The last is for you to Enter Full Screen, if you wish to see the image bigger.

How To Use Tagging In Your Swap Shop Post
If you tag someone in a comment, they will get a notification that they have been tagged and if they check their notifications should get back to you sooner, rather than later. Tagged posts override group settings as well. If they don’t follow their group posts, they most likely will if they get a tag.
To tag someone in a post to make sure they get a notification that they have been tagged. Start typing their name and a box should come up that gives you a choice of whom you may be seeking. Click on the person who matches the person you are tagging. You may have to backspace or put in a few more characters to get the person's name to show up. Once you have that person tagged, their name will show up in blue as a link in a post or comment and they will receive notification that they have been tagged.
