How To Sell Vintage Items Through The Swap Shop

Selling vintage items can range from a casually rewarding pastime to being a profitable business. The vintage item market spans a multitude of interest areas. These can include large and small collectables, nostalgia pieces or hip reusable items for home and personal use. Selling vintage items will require research into choosing an appropriate selling venue, finding consumer desired products and appropriately pricing each item. The creation of a small business of this kind should be approached with diligence, organization and a sense of exploration. While doing so can be a lot of work, dealing with vintage products can be rewarding and fun.

Instructions

    • 1
Flea markets can be a good venue for selling some vintage wares.
Choose the appropriate selling arena for your products. The best way to decide where to sell your wares is to focus on their size, desirability and the type of presentation you would like to employ. Restored items of medium to high value can best be sold on eBay.com or Etsy.com. On the other hand, lower-priced items or those in need of repair will likely find a better customer base at garage sales, flea markets or consignment shops. Craigslist.com is a good venue for a wide price range and particularly for items of large size, but its use will depend on your ability to interact with customers in person. If you are interested in running a brick-and-mortar store, your first step will be to talk with your financial advisor. Write up a business plan. Keep in mind a realistic budget while finding an optimum location for your product base and your targeted customers. Look for an attractive storefront with high traffic, the opportunity for visually appealing signs and adequate interior space for your wares.
    • 2
Make an informed decision on what your inventory will contain. Items classified as "vintage" should be at least 20 years old. Items that are much older are considered antiques and will likely entail different research for a different customer base. Vintage inventory can vary greatly, but it will often be beneficial for you to define a main theme or focus. While not every item you attempt to sell has to fall under the theme, limiting your scope will increase your efficiency as a researcher and seller, as well as allow you to be remembered by those who have browsed your items. If possible, you should choose products of which you have some prior knowledge and interest.
    • 3
Do research in order to be successful in selling vintage items
Research your items. In order to successfully sell older items, it is crucial to understand their history and the consumer demand. Investigate the desirability of your products and determine to what audience you should be catering. Research the specific details of your products, such as manufacturing date and place, materials used, proper care and maintenance and functionality, if applicable.
    • 4
Price your items in a way that is fair to you and your consumers. Pricing your inventory in an appropriate manner can be the trickiest part of selling vintage wares. Factors you must keep in mind include: market demand for the item, its condition, its age, your time spent researching and placing it on the market, the original purchasing cost for you and any costs incurred in restoration.
    • 5
Interesting and eye-catching displays can increase traffic and sales.
Create eye-catching displays that will increase traffic for your items. Whatever selling arena you choose, the appearance of your products can have a direct effect on profitability. If selling at a market, fair or garage sale, display your items so they are visually appealing. Clean all items thoroughly and set them apart for maximum viewing. Make use of colorful fabrics to cover tables and displays, and create interesting signs and labels. Increase traffic by posting signs around your neighborhood, on community boards online and offline, and promoting by word of mouth. When selling through online venues, keep in mind that your potential customers will need to rely solely on the pictures and descriptions you provide. Be specific and factual in your descriptions, and be sure to provide clear, bright and flattering pictures of your items. You can increase your item views by optimizing your descriptions to include relevant keywords that are likely to be searched on major search engines. Other advertising venues include blogs, social media sites like Facebook and Twitter and newsletters.

How To Edit Items and Delete Pictures When An Item Is Sold on the Swap Shop

After a picture is posted, you can still edit the information on the image. You can also delete your picture by doing the same from this location.

*Go to your album or picture and click on the photo.
*At the bottom of the picture there is a disappearing menu. Hover at the bottom and the menu shows up with several links - 1) a link to the album, 2) Tag Photo, 3) Options and 4) Like
*Go to Options, another menu will come up where you have a choice of seven items.
*The first allows you to change the location.
*The second and third option is to rotate your picture in case it's upside down or side ways.
*The fourth and fifth option really doesn't apply to groups, unless you want to download the pictures or make it your profile photo.
*The sixth is where you choose to "REMOVE THIS PHOTO".
*The last is for you to Enter Full Screen, if you wish to see the image bigger.

To EDIT information, such as size, price, etc. this is not in the drop down menu. Go to the picture and above where comments are there is a blue EDIT link, click on that and put in the information that pertains to the picture posted.

How To Use Tagging In Your Swap Shop Post

If you tag someone in a comment, they will get a notification that they have been tagged and if they check their notifications should get back to you sooner, rather than later. Tagged posts override group settings as well. If they don’t follow their group posts, they most likely will if they get a tag.

To tag someone in a post to make sure they get a notification that they have been tagged. Start typing their name and a box should come up that gives you a choice of whom you may be seeking. Click on the person who matches the person you are tagging. You may have to backspace or put in a few more characters to get the person's name to show up. Once you have that person tagged, their name will show up in blue as a link in a post or comment and they will receive notification that they have been tagged.

How To Post Multiple Pictures To An Album

If you have multiple pictures that you want to post to the swap shop, it is a good idea to create an album for your pictures. This is a courtesy to other members in that you are not posting multiple times. So, what are the steps? It's actually pretty easy.

1) When you are at the top where it says "Write Post" or "Add Photo/Video" - Click on the "Add Photo/Video"
2) Then, there are three options - "Upload Photo/Video" on the right or on the left is "Create Photo Album". Please do not use the middle one for swap shops. Go to the right to "Create Photo Album".
3) That will open up a box to choose pictures from your source. Choose all your photos by highlighting them and click "Open". They will then start loading.
4) Under each picture it will have "say something about this photo". That's where you put the information about the item - description, price, location.
5) When you are done with each photo, click the "Post Photos" blue box and your album is created.
6) You can always go back and add photos at a later time as well to the same album, by going to the album and at the top right it will have "add photos".
7) If you are posting from a phone, you will either need to get to a computer, find a way to post an album from your phone (which might depend on the phone you have) or you will be limited to the five posts in a 24 hour period.
DO NOT PLACE PICTURES IN THE FILES SECTION, THEY WILL ONLY BE DELETED.

How To Upload A Single Photo

Posting photos of items on the swap shop does not have to be a big deal. Use this option if you have fewer than five photos that you want to post.
1) At the top of the page above where it says "Write Something", there are several options. Go to Add Photo/Video.
2) For a single photo choose "Upload Photo Video" on the next screen.
3) Write in your description.
4) Then click on "Choose File", which you should have ready on your computer to choose.
5) Click on the file to upload
6) Put in your location under the next block
7) Then click "Post"
DO NOT PLACE PICTURES IN THE FILES SECTION, THEY WILL ONLY BE DELETED.

How To Use The Swap Shop For A Successful Garage Sale

Posting your garage sale on various swap shops is a great way to help have a successful garage sale.  However, that should only be one part of the your planning to make some money off all that stuff you've been holding on to.  Here are some more ideas for you to consider.

  1. Schedule your garage sale far enough in advance so that you can post on the swap shop.
  2. Hold your sale on a nonholiday weekend unless you live in a resort town with lots of vacationers. Check the long-range forecast for good weather.
  3. Dig through your garage, attic, basement and house for stuff to sell. Include everything you want to get rid of--one person's junk is another's treasure.
  4. Spread the word among friends and family. The more you have to sell, the larger the crowd you can draw. Offer to sell their stuff for a 20 percent commission.
  5. Scrub, wash, polish, dust and launder anything you plan to sell. If an item needs a simple repair that could greatly improve the price, fix it.
  6. Round up volunteers if you expect large crowds. Friends and family may be willing to help for a free meal, the chance to sell their own junk, or just the fun of it.
  7. Print up one-page fliers advertising your sale and put them up at local coffee shops, laundries, grocery stores or community centers.
  8. Place large, neatly printed signs in your neighborhood the night before or the morning of the sale. Put signs in front of your house as well.
  9. Use masking tape and a permanent marker to mark everything with a price. "$1 or less" tables or boxes save time and attract shoppers. Leave room to bargain down when pricing items. Remember that you're trying to get rid of your stuff when you price it. You may have spent a fortune on that Beta VCR, but you'll be lucky to get a quarter for it now.
  10. Hang clothes on makeshift racks. Borrow portable tables to display items. Put crowd-pleasers (furniture, tools) up front to entice people. Have a "10 cents" box to encourage further browsing.
  11. Set up your cash table near the entrance. Have plenty of small change, a cash box, a calculator, pencil and pen, a ledger book (to inventory commissions), bags and boxes, newspaper to wrap valuables, and a tape measure.
  12. Make sure there's plenty of parking; relocate your car if necessary.
  13. Be cheerful, get people talking and encourage haggling. Many people are reluctant to haggle but find it's fun once they start.

Missouri Swap Shop Rules - Updated October 15, 2012

1. Bump only entire albums! Bump no more than five albums or five individual posts not made in an album once every 24 hours. This DOES NOT mean bump individual pictures out of an album, only the entire album may be bumped and no more than five.
  • For those of you who don’t know what “bump” means, that’s when someone posts the word bump to move their post to the top of the page. Also, no different than posting an asterisk or a character or a comment saying it’s still available. They are all bumps.
2.  Please refrain from purposely placing a bump on others posts and bump only your own.
3.  Please refrain from making frivolous comments/conversations on posts, as this bumps the item to the top for unpractical reasons.
4. Make an album only if you have three or more pictures. Do not place only one picture in an album. If you have less than three pics, combine your albums, upload and add to an already existing album or post as an individual post.
5. Post limit is five (5) in a 24 hour period if you are not using an album and the edit box in an album and no more than five albums per day. If you use the comment box, rather than the edit box in an album, five posts applies to you as well. Use an album and the edit box and you are allowed to post as many as you want. This will be strictly enforced, meaning posts over five will be deleted.
6. Do not repost the same item unless it has been at least seven days since prior posting.
7.  If you have multiple views of the same item, they are required to be in an album because the posts will get separated.
8. It is considered rude to hijack another person’s post, either looking for goods or posting one of your own within their post unless it’s something they are looking to buy. Play nice and make a post of your own. The same Same hijack rule for posting other groups. We don’t care if you advertise your group, but please refrain from doing it within someone else’s post, unless it’s linked specifically to an item the person is looking to purchase.
9. Put pertinent information in your posts, price, location and description. Do not post "Make Offer" or "OBO = or best offer" alone, a price is required or post will be deleted. This is a Swap Shop, not an auction group, if you wish to auction your items there are other sites and groups for that.
10. No posting of inappropriate content including adult toys, videos, creams, etc. Please keep used or unused liquor off the group as well. Keep it legal - No selling of illegal items, drop-side cribs included - It is your responsibility as the user to check the Federal, State and Local laws for resale.
11.  If your item has sold or you are no longer looking for a particular item, remove your post. If you cannot remove your post for some reason, state on the post that the item is sold or send a message to the admin and the post will be removed.
12.  Posts older than 21 days that haven't been bumped is removed from the group regularly during site cleaning. This keeps the group content current and more user friendly. All bumps of any kind are also removed after 24 hours, which doesn't affect your place in line, you are still in the same position as when it was bumped. It just looks cleaner and doesn't look like it's been bumped five times and not worth selling.
13.  And as always, be kind and no arguments on the group. Rude comments, arguments and those who ignore the rules might just find posts removed or yourself banned and we don’t want to have to do that.
14. No business opportunity sites or links, and no direct, online or catalog sales. The same Local business may advertise once a week with appropriate contact information.
15. Blocking admins for any reason is considered sufficient reason to be banned from the group.
