Buying and Selling of Pets on the Swap Shop

You will be seeing a change on our swap shops soon, and it has to do with the buying and selling of pets here on the swap shops. Very soon, we will be instituting a policy of NO PET SALES on any of the swap shops in the Missouri Swap Shop Network.
Craigslist, the popular classified advertisement website, allows people to sell furniture, cars, apartments, and other personal items through online interactions. For animal welfare reasons, Craigslist does not allow the sale of any pets or animals, but the adoption of pets, with a small re-homing fee, is allowed. Although this clause is found on the website’s Terms of Use page, many Craigslist users ignore it and sell litters of puppies and kittens anyway. This causes many problems, as these pets are oftentimes coming out of illegal puppy mills and kitten mills. Unknowingly, those who end up buying these animals from Craigslist are contributing to the inhumane puppy and kitten mill industry.
Please post your thoughts on this upcoming policy change. Your feedback will help us construct an appropriate response to this growing problem.

How To Negotiate the Price of an Item on the Swap Shop

No matter what the price of an item, don't rule out discounting it if a prospective buyer wants to negotiate. It's better to sell the item for 20-50% less than its original price than not to sell the item at all. Be open to negotiating, especially if you are trying to move the item quickly. Experienced swap shop buyers want to make a deal!

As the old saying goes, “you catch more flies with honey,” which really means that the nicer you are to people, the more inclined they are to help you out. Every time I ask for a reduction on a price, I just ask kindly, “Would you please consider $X for your item?” Sometimes, if they are motivated sellers, they will say yes so long as it’s a reasonable offer. However, if it’s too low of an offer, they might wait for another buyer.

Pricing your items well is important, but also expect to have some wiggle room in there. Customers are the happiest when the feel like they've gotten a good deal, or talked you down a little in your price. Play the game a bit! But don't do this too soon---save the bargaining for a little later in the sale.

How To Use Item Descriptions in the Swap Shop

Many times people just post items on the swap shop, simply stating, "Here it is.  Here's the price."  However, if you truly want to see an increase in results on the swap shop, try telling people a little more about the item.  Some questions that might help spark your creativity:

Where did you you get the item?
Is there something special or unique about the item?
Why are you selling it now?
What history does the item have?
Where is the item located?
Will you deliver, or is it for pick up only?

These questions are just starters to help you think more about what you are wanting to sell.  Don't just post a picture and a price....TELL A STORY!!

Happy swapping!

Location! Location! Location!

Are you looking for another great way to increase your swap shop response and results?  Do yourself and your buyers a favor by CLEARLY giving your location.  With so many people using online swap shops now, it is more important than ever to let your location be known for both point of sale and for pick up as well.

An address isn't necessary, but a city name and neighborhood would be extremely helpful...and profitable, too!

The Swap Shop is about Friends Connecting with Friends!

We gets TONS of requests to join the various swap shops in our network.  Unfortunately, there are some less than honest people out there who have no intention of connecting locally with friends and neighbors.  That is why we review each member request we receive.  We follow a very simple principle: NO SWAP SHOP FRIENDS?  NO APPROVAL!

Occasionally, a person is new to their particular area and has not had the chance to make friends.  In those cases, we encourage those potential members to contact the admins through a private message. We will review your request, and if it is legit, you're in!

How To Report Spam Posts on the Swap Shop

Facebook now provides our swap shop pages with a new tool to fight the posting of spam.  On any individual post in the upper right hand corner you can click a drop down window.  From there you have the opportunity to click "Report as Abuse".  This in turn is sent as an alert to the admins for review.

Feel free to use this for both spam and inappropriate content!

Swap Shop Tip: Post Your Price!

Do you want to generate more response to your post on the swap shop?  One simple way to do just that is to be sure to include a price.  Many people may read your post, but will not respond because they are unsure of your intention, or the seriousness of the sale.

Make a real difference in response:  POST YOUR PRICE!

Upcoming Changes to the Missouri Swap Shops Effective June 1st

Starting June 1st, you will start seeing some changes to the pages on the Missouri Swap shop Network.  These changes are being made because of a problem we are having....the problem of success.

The swap shops have grown tremendously, and continue to do so.  The problem with our growth is that others have taken notice, and seek to spam or hijack our groups.  No doubt you have seen some of the ads for shoes, purses, weight loss, etc.  While we work hard to keep these problems down to a minimum, some still make it through the approval process.

Starting June 1st, we will be adding a new policy to all the swap shops associated with our network.  We will no longer allow distributor posts of ANY kind, local or otherwise.  We will no longer allow the posting of business advertising unless approved by the administrators of the network or the individual pages.

The original idea behind the shops was to provide an outlet for individuals to buy, sell, trade or barter personal items.  Because of the increasing number of distributor and business postings, these individual posts are being pushed out of the way.

With the new policy, businesses may post on the sites by paying a small fee for advertising across the network.  By paying one fee, the ad will appear on all of the swap shops in the Missouri Swap Shop Network.

Thanks for using the shops.  We appreciate your use, and we hope that it provides a unique service in  you life.  We also appreciate your feedback and suggestions as well.

Blessings,

Doc Burkhart

How To Add A Friend To The Swap Shop

Did you know that you can add a friend to the swap shop?  It's easy!  In the upper right hand corner of the swap shop page is an easy link to add the name of a friend to your local swap shop.  now only does this provide a great way to connect, and tell others about the swap shop, it also help ALL the members by only adding TRUSTED friends.  This helps all of us keep an eye on the spammers that LOVE to invade the shops selling internet shoes, payday loans, and weird vitamins.

Thanks for using your local swap shop and TELL A FRIEND (OR TWO)!!

Please Manage Your Posts

As we enter into the New Year, we would like to kindly remind everyone to please delete or edit posts if you sell an item, have a price change, or would like to add items.

We also ask that if you do post multiple items, that you consider building folders holding all the pictures of items you have for sale.  This helps to reduce clutter, and shoppers REALLY appreciate having similar items in one place.

Thanks for using the swap shop, and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Merry Christmas Swap Shoppers!

This is a just a short message to wish all the members on the swap shops in the Missouri Swap Shop Network a very MERRY CHRISTMAS!   Please don't forget the TRUE MEANING of Christmas!

The true meaning of Christmas is love. John 3:16-17 says, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him." The true meaning of Christmas is the celebration of this incredible act of love.

The real Christmas story is the story of God's becoming a human being in the Person of Jesus Christ. Why did God do such a thing? Because He loves us! Why was Christmas necessary? Because we needed a Savior! Why does God love us so much? Because He is love itself (1 John 4:8). Why do we celebrate Christmas each year? Out of gratitude for what God did for us, we remember His birth by giving each other gifts, worshipping Him, and being especially conscious of the poor and less fortunate.

The true meaning of Christmas is love. God loved His own and provided a way—the only Way—for us to spend eternity with Him. He gave His only Son to take our punishment for our sins. He paid the price in full, and we are free from condemnation when we accept that free gift of love. "But God demonstrated His own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8).

It's the weekend!  I know, I know, you hate the idea of cleaning on your days off, but could you do all your fellow swap shop friends a favor?

Please clean up your old posts.

The weekend is a great time to go back through and remove old posts and pictures.  This helps to reduce clutter on the swap shop, making it more fun and useful for everyone to use.

Dad told you to clean up after yourself, so let's get crackin'!  No dessert until you finish the job!

Update from Doc Burkhart, Swap Shop Admin

Many of you already know, but for those of you who are new to the swap shops here in our network, not only do I serve as chief admin and spam chaser, but I am also a full-time missionary to Korea.  I have been home a few months here in Missouri on furlough, going to school and raising support to return to the work I love.

If you would like to know more about this ministry, and the work being accomplished in Korea, then please check out the DECEMBER 2012 NEWSLETTER .

I would really appreciate your prayers for my wife and I.  We truly enjoy serving God in this capacity, and would like to be able to do more.  Your prayers would help with that a lot!

Please know that I will continue to be involved in the swap shops, as I was on my first missionary term.  I am looking forward to the continued growth of connections on the the swap shop, and I know it provides a unique service to my neighbors back home in Missouri.

Thank you so much for your friendship, and if I don't get a chance to tell you, MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

God bless,

Doc Burkhart

Check Your Posts Daily

It is a good idea to check on your swap shop posts on a regular, if not daily basis.  Sometimes questions and comments arise that only the original poster can answer.  You might also be able to offer additional incentives or even other products that might go along with the original post.

Don't forget that once your item is sold, please delete the original post!  This does two things:  it reduces the amount of unnecessary clutter on the swap shop, and the original poster does not have to worry about managing messages that are out of date.

Thanks for using the swap shop!  For more information on all the swap shops in our network, visit our main page at http://moswapshop.blogspot.com

Missouri Swap Shop: SPAMMERS BEWARE!!

This is a notice to all the spammers who frequent our various swap shops on the Missouri Swap Shop Network.  Please be aware that we are aggressively monitoring our swap sites for spammers, which include but are not limited to:
-fake profiles
-MLM business sites or links (without a local contact)
-off-site links
-profiles for those out of state

If you are a distributor for a product (such as ACE, Scentsy, Pink Zebra, Wraps, Designer Denim, etc), then you MUST provide local contact information.  If we don't see it, it will likely get deleted.  If it is posted multiple times, it will get you BANNED.

Our swap shop members do a great job of reporting and blocking folks who violate the rules.  Let's keep our shops FUN and LOCALLY based by following these guidelines!!

How To Start a Flea Market Business Through the Swap Shop

  • Starting a small flea market business can be tedious and challenging. There are many pertinent steps that must take place before the store can open for business. An owner of a successful flea market booth will conduct market research, develop an idea for the most marketable product or service in an open market environment and strategize on advertising opportunities, all before opening.
  • Mannequins, Industrial Hangers, Clothes Racks
    1.  Get the proper licenses for your business. You can check with your Secretary of State's Office, which often has a branch located in a municipal building, such as a city hall or county courthouse. Also, check to see if there is a Small Business Administration (SBA) locally, where you can take free business related classes and learn more on where to register your business. If not, go to the SBA's website (see Resources).
  • 2
Prepare a business budget plan to set spending limits. When considering your budget, be sure to include possible expenses and any available resources for the business. For instance, an expense would be the cost of the goods or preparation of services, equipment and rental space. An available resource should help support the distribution of those goods or services. It could be a local business or store owner that can provide used equipment in exchange for a percentage of the store's profits and the promotion of the sponsoring business.
  • 3
Shop for rental space. Local flea markets usually operate daily and provide utilities and affordable pre-sectioned space, in varies sizes, in a market style fashion. The rental amounts will vary according to the size of the booth. While shopping for a booth, observe potential competitors within the flea market as well as the potential flow of foot traffic in the marketplace. Ask the management about how a flea market tenants can participate in promoting his business inside the flea market. See if the management office offers help with advertising for the collective businesses there.
  • 4
Typical Gate for Flea Market Booths
Consider is the types of consumers the business will serve. Survey the typical flea market customer. After picking your perfect location, go to the stores with the best sales performance and talk with some of their customers. This will help you discover the most marketable products or services and determine the optimal strategy for promoting your business to a similar market.
  • 5
Choose the goods or services you may want to provide. You may want to invest in a computer with Internet service, a small cash register, credit card machine and showcases for your goods to properly maintain inventory. You may also be required to secure your own property after the flea market's hours of operation. You will need to build or install a gate or door with lock and key entry. Another approach is providing consumer services typically offered in flea markets, such as a photography studio or tattoo shop. These businesses have no marketable inventory to secure or maintain. Though you will still have to secure your equipment, it isn't necessary to have a computer, cash register or credit card machine to process sales. Service businesses usually offer flat fees for the services offered to their customers, thus, patrons are prepared to pay their balances, upon the completion of the service, with cash or check. If you don't choose to use a cash register, buy a locked portable cash box. For record keeping you can keep a simple notebook to record customers names and keep track of sales on all service transactions.
  • 6
    Floor Glass Showcase
Prepare for opening day by designing some grand opening fliers to distribute both locally and within the flea market. Highlight sales and discounts for your new customers, and throw in a small gift to entice them to return.

How To Sell Vintage Items Through The Swap Shop

Selling vintage items can range from a casually rewarding pastime to being a profitable business. The vintage item market spans a multitude of interest areas. These can include large and small collectables, nostalgia pieces or hip reusable items for home and personal use. Selling vintage items will require research into choosing an appropriate selling venue, finding consumer desired products and appropriately pricing each item. The creation of a small business of this kind should be approached with diligence, organization and a sense of exploration. While doing so can be a lot of work, dealing with vintage products can be rewarding and fun.

    Instructions

      • 1
Flea markets can be a good venue for selling some vintage wares.
Choose the appropriate selling arena for your products. The best way to decide where to sell your wares is to focus on their size, desirability and the type of presentation you would like to employ. Restored items of medium to high value can best be sold on eBay.com or Etsy.com. On the other hand, lower-priced items or those in need of repair will likely find a better customer base at garage sales, flea markets or consignment shops. Craigslist.com is a good venue for a wide price range and particularly for items of large size, but its use will depend on your ability to interact with customers in person. If you are interested in running a brick-and-mortar store, your first step will be to talk with your financial advisor. Write up a business plan. Keep in mind a realistic budget while finding an optimum location for your product base and your targeted customers. Look for an attractive storefront with high traffic, the opportunity for visually appealing signs and adequate interior space for your wares.
      • 2
Make an informed decision on what your inventory will contain. Items classified as "vintage" should be at least 20 years old. Items that are much older are considered antiques and will likely entail different research for a different customer base. Vintage inventory can vary greatly, but it will often be beneficial for you to define a main theme or focus. While not every item you attempt to sell has to fall under the theme, limiting your scope will increase your efficiency as a researcher and seller, as well as allow you to be remembered by those who have browsed your items. If possible, you should choose products of which you have some prior knowledge and interest.
      • 3
Do research in order to be successful in selling vintage items
Research your items. In order to successfully sell older items, it is crucial to understand their history and the consumer demand. Investigate the desirability of your products and determine to what audience you should be catering. Research the specific details of your products, such as manufacturing date and place, materials used, proper care and maintenance and functionality, if applicable.
      • 4
Price your items in a way that is fair to you and your consumers. Pricing your inventory in an appropriate manner can be the trickiest part of selling vintage wares. Factors you must keep in mind include: market demand for the item, its condition, its age, your time spent researching and placing it on the market, the original purchasing cost for you and any costs incurred in restoration.
      • 5
Interesting and eye-catching displays can increase traffic and sales.
Create eye-catching displays that will increase traffic for your items. Whatever selling arena you choose, the appearance of your products can have a direct effect on profitability. If selling at a market, fair or garage sale, display your items so they are visually appealing. Clean all items thoroughly and set them apart for maximum viewing. Make use of colorful fabrics to cover tables and displays, and create interesting signs and labels. Increase traffic by posting signs around your neighborhood, on community boards online and offline, and promoting by word of mouth. When selling through online venues, keep in mind that your potential customers will need to rely solely on the pictures and descriptions you provide. Be specific and factual in your descriptions, and be sure to provide clear, bright and flattering pictures of your items. You can increase your item views by optimizing your descriptions to include relevant keywords that are likely to be searched on major search engines. Other advertising venues include blogs, social media sites like Facebook and Twitter and newsletters.
